NIL legal expert speaks on latest Trine podcast

April 28, 2022

James O'ConnorAn expert in name, image and likeness (NIL) as well as a licensed sports agent, Fort Wayne attorney James O’Connor, joins the newest episode of Trine University’s Center for Sports Studies podcast to discuss NIL and its legal ramifications.

For the past year, O’Connor has educated college athletic departments and conferences across the nation on the legal aspects of NIL legislation. Although the NCAA now allows student-athletes to profit off their name, image and likeness, regulations vary from state to state.

In the podcast, O’Connor explains how knowledgeable legal representation is essential for athletic departments and student-athletes. For example, the NCAA prohibits entering into agreements with certain industries, and the right agent can help advise student-athletes on these matters.

Produced through the Trine Broadcasting Network, the Trine Center for Sports Studies podcast focuses on the business side of sports, including interviews with sports professionals and current research in sports studies. Hosted by Brandon Podgorski, director of Trine’s Center for Sports Studies, the podcast is available at css.transistor.fm as well as on platforms such as Spotify, iTunes, Google Play and Stitcher.
