CE students take part in Constructor for a Day

October 10, 2022

TOLEDO, Ohio — Several Trine University civil engineering students had the opportunity to get a closer look at the construction industry during the Ohio Contractors Association Rich DiGeronimo Constructor for a Day program on Sept. 27.

Sponsored by the organization’s Toledo chapter, the event included trips to Hanson Aggregate’s Waterville, Ohio, quarry, where students witnessed a quarry blast. They also toured the Michael DiSalle Bridge project in Toledo, Ohio.

Students had the opportunity to meet multiple contractors throughout the day.

Evan Holman, president of Trine’s student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers, said his favorite part was watching the demolition at the rock quarry.

“I learned about explosives work and heard from different companies about how to use this understanding of explosive power,” he said.

Trine civil engineering students Ted Hofmeister, Preston Ankney, Annalise O’Daniel, Alex Ponx and Michael Chandler also attended, along with Hemin Mohammed, Ph.D., assistant professor of civil engineering.
