Trine’s civil engineering chapter again recognized by national organization

December 27, 2021

Trine University’s student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) has once again received a Certificate of Commendation from the national organization for its work and achievements.

The distinction, which recognizes the chapter’s efforts for 2020, is earned by only the top 5% of all student organizations. This is the second year in a row Trine has received the honor.

“Given the difficult circumstances of 2020, it’s great that our chapter was able to remain in this elite status,” said TJ Murphy, faculty advisor. “I’m proud of the continued efforts of our student chapter and their commitment to the future of civil engineering.”

Trine’s ASCE officers, all civil engineering majors, are:

  • President: Bill Kennelly of Chardon, Ohio
  • Vice President: Lizabeth Pablo of Cromwell, Indiana
  • Treasurer: Jackson Huckeby of Freeland, Michigan
  • Corresponding Secretary: Makenna Sheets of Fort Wayne, Indiana
  • Recording Secretary: Erin Haase of Napoleon, Ohio
  • Professional Outreach Manager: Quinten Prieur of Constantine, Michigan
  • Conference Manager: Kristen Nguyen of Senoia, Georgia
  • Recruitment Manager: Alex Layman of Ney, Ohio
  • Freshman Representatives: Jack Kletzly of Lebanon, Ohio, and Chris Parker of Lebanon, Indiana

Last year, Trine University’s chapter went on to earn the 2020 ASCE Distinguished Chapter Award for Region 4, given annually to the top chapter in the region covering Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, West Virginia, Virginia, and North and South Carolina. Trine also was one of five finalists for the Robert Ridgway Student Chapter Award, given to the ASCE’s most outstanding student chapter nationwide.

Each year, approximately 380 ASCE student chapters around the world submit an annual report for review by the ASCE’s Committee on Student Members, made up primarily of practicing civil engineers and faculty from around the United States. The report describes chapters’ participation in national, state and local activities; their ability to set and meet goals; the percentage of department students who are members of the chapter; their ability to maintain a budget and other items. Certificates of Commendation are awarded to those chapters judged to be in the top 5%.
