Trine student groups help humane shelter experience largest Giving Day ever

January 22, 2020

The animals at the Community Humane Shelter of Steuben County got a big Giving Day boost thanks to student groups from Trine University.

The Trine Student Marketing Association worked with the shelter to create a marketing plan for Giving Day, held Dec. 3.

Alisa Mills, executive director at the shelter, and Keirsten Eberts, vice president of the shelter’s board and assistant vice president for TrineOnline, attended one of the association’s meetings to help explain what they wanted and to brainstorm with the students.

“We have board members who work at Trine University and a lot of students who volunteer at the shelter,” said Mills. “They are always looking for ways to help.”

One of the marketing association students invited Andy Brown, assistant professor in Trine’s Department of Humanities and Communication, to attend the meeting. Brown offered the services of his PR Writing and Promotion class to produce Giving Day promotions for the shelter.

Students from the marketing association created the plan and presented it at a meeting of the shelter’s board. They also conducted a penny wars event in the Rick L. and Vicki L. James University Center that raised $240 for the shelter.

The PR Writing and Promotion class recorded radio ads run on local radio stations, including WLKI. The class also took a field trip to the shelter and shot video of the animals and facility, using the footage to produce video public service announcements that ran on the Trine Broadcasting Network.

The video announcements received hundreds and even thousands of views, and the campaign raised more than $7,500 for the shelter.

“It was our biggest Giving Tuesday to date,” Mills said.

“This was an outstanding opportunity for our students to create content for a great cause,” said Brown.  “We are proud to have been part of it and look forward to doing similar projects in the near future.”
