GOSHEN — Christina Zumbrun, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Mathematics
and Physics, spoke at Goshen College on Wednesday, April 4, as part of that college’s
Science Speakers Lecture Series.
Her talk was titled, “Attitudes and Beliefs Toward Statistics: What are they and why do they matter to all teachers?”
Zumbrun discussed a recent research study she conducted that examined attitudes and beliefs of secondary mathematics teachers toward statistics. Topics she covered included teaching and learning experiences that shape teacher attitudes, and why “statistical thinking” is important for all teachers.
“Interdisciplinary outreach, academic collaboration and professional networking are considered high-impact practices of effective instruction and scholarship, across the board, and most especially in higher mathematics,” said Haseeb Kazi, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Mathematics and Physics. “Dr. Zumbrun’s recent presentation to the community of mathematicians and other educators at Goshen College brings prestige, to both her as a smart professional and us as a good department.”
Goshen’s Science Speakers is a series of lectures, discussions and other activities related to the sciences.
