Paper cranes

From left, Japanese exchange student Yoshi Sakai shows Trine University education students Adam Miller of Fort Wayne, Tarah Brennan of Allegan, Michigan and Jimmy Bailey of Richmond along with Kathy Pollock, assistant professor in the Franks School of Education, how to fold paper cranes during Pollock’s Children’s Literature class on Tuesday, Feb. 21. Sakai and fellow exchange student Mahoko Kuki shared the art with the class, which was studying the book, Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes. Based on a true story, the book tells the story of a 12-year-old Japanese girl’s quest to fold 1,000 paper cranes — which legend says will make a sick person well — when she contracts leukemia 10 years after the bombing of Hiroshima.
