Graduate courses fuel rise in Trine summer enrollment

June 03, 2016

Trine University has once again seen growth in its summer enrollment numbers.

A total of 1,272 students are enrolled in summer courses, a new record. Much of the growth is fueled by growth in graduate school enrollment, which makes up about one-third of the total.

The number of students increased by 15 percent on Trine’s main campus and 45 percent in the School of Professional Studies (SPS).

During the summer months, students from Trine and other colleges take classes in shorter sessions of six and 12 weeks. More than 100 classes provide students an opportunity to catch up or take extra classes while still being able to enjoy summer activities.

This year, 628 students are taking summer classes on the main campus, compared to 546 last year. There was even more growth in Trine’s School of Professional studies, with 609 students this summer compared to 420 in summer 2015.

The number of graduate students taking summer courses on the main campus more than doubled from summer 2015. The number of SPS graduate students taking summer courses more than tripled.

There also are 35 students enrolled for classes this summer at Trine’s Peoria, Arizona, campus.

“Summer classes provide a convenience at a discounted cost, both for Trine students looking to graduate early and for students from other colleges looking to catch up while they’re home for the summer,” said Earl D. Brooks II, Ph.D., Trine president. “The continued growth in the program speaks to the value this educational service provides.”

The classes are offered in traditional face-to-face setting, online or a combination of both. Classes offered online enable students to take courses remotely at any time from any location. The last six-week session is June 27 through Aug. 6 and students may register for classes through July 1. For more information, visit trine.edu/getahead.

Graduate school enrollment is also expected to drive growth in Trine University’s student numbers this fall. While modest growth is anticipated in undergraduate enrollment, the university is projecting about 50 percent growth in graduate students on its main campus and about 75 percent growth in graduate students taking classes through its School of Professional Studies.

The university also expects continued growth in the number of dual enrollment students.

“While undergraduate education is and always will be an integral part of what we do at Trine University, it is exciting to see the growth in our graduate studies,” said Scott J. Goplin, vice president for enrollment management. “These quality programs fulfill a need for Trine students who have earned their bachelor’s degree and for working adults.”
