Haseeb Kazi, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Mathematics and Informatics at Trine University, presented the keynote address at this year’s International Pure Mathematics Conference of the Pakistan Mathematical Society (PakMS).
The conference, the 17th annual such event for the organization, was held in Islamabad, Pakistan, from Aug. 5-7. It included experts in a variety of branches of mathematics from multiple countries.
“PakMS is the most respected, recognized and well-known mathematical association in Pakistan, and this international conference is their grand annual event,” said Kazi. “Receiving the invitation, first from the vice president and then a formal letter from the president of PakMS, was an honor.”
In addition to representing Trine University, Kazi also acted on behalf of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) and the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR), both organizations he serves. He was able to meet with the officers and executive board of PakMS and discuss issues of interest to the various organizations, and possible collaboration.
Kazi presented on “Undergraduate Research in Mathematics: Significance, Trends, and Recommendations,” then followed with a question-and-answer session.
“I was able to answer particular questions about the importance, planning and implementation of sponsoring and promoting undergraduate research,” he said.
He said that since the conference he has kept in touch with several students and faculty via email, and has given one student advice on her current research.
“Technology can help in becoming an ‘overseas mentor,’ ” he said.
