AVON — The Asphalt Pavement Association of Indiana (APAI) and the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) will partner with Trine University of Angola on a joint quality-control/quality-assurance (QC/QA) Plant Technician Certification Program.
The partnership was formalized Wednesday in Avon at a meeting attended by representatives of INDOT’s Office of Materials Management; Trine University; APAI member companies Milestone Contractors, Rieth Riley Construction, E & B Paving and Brooks Construction; Heritage Research; and APAI staff.
The certification class will be held at Trine University’s Indianapolis Regional Education Center in Avon from Jan. 17-20, 2017, with expected attendance of 40 industry and INDOT personnel. Instructors will be from INDOT’s Office of Materials Management and APAI member firms. Lab sessions will be conducted at Heritage Research in Indianapolis, located on West Morris Street, just 10 minutes from the Trine facility.
Dr. William Barry, Ph.D., P.E., associate professor and chair, Reiners Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Trine, will serve as the program coordinator.
Attendees traditionally have come from asphalt producers, consulting engineering firms, testing laboratories, aggregate firms, and state and local government agencies. According to FHWA regulations, contracting firms must employ state certified QC/QA personnel in order to perform INDOT projects in order to comply with ITM 583. Since its inception, this nationally recognized INDOT-APAI training course has educated nearly 750 individuals under the INDOT certified producer program. There are three days of classroom and lab training and a half-day written exam. Professional Development Hours are available upon request.
