ANGOLA, Ind. – Trine University has received a $350,000 grant from English, Bonter, Mitchell Foundation for its developing Professional Doctorate in Physical Therapy (DPT) program.
The grant, payable over five years, will be used to help fund program development, building renovation and laboratory equipment. The foundation committed to the grant July 18.
"Trine University is grateful for the partnership with English, Bonter, Mitchell Foundation as we establish our Doctorate in Physical Therapy program," said Earl D. Brooks II, Ph.D., Trine president. "It is vital to have such support as we work to bring to the region an accredited program that is needed."
Trine seeks to help meet the need for accredited graduate-degree programs for physical therapy; Indiana is home to two programs. The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a 39 percent growth in the number of physical therapists needed through 2020, and reports the median wage in 2010 was $76,310 (the most recent figure available).
The doctoral program in partnership with Parkview Hospital and Lutheran Hospital of Indiana, both in Fort Wayne, will be located on Parkview's Randallia campus, 1819 Carew St. A 66,000-square-foot facility is being renovated to house a state-of-the art biomechanics and movement sciences lab, along with classrooms and offices to support faculty and staff.
Max Baumgartner, P.T., Ph.D., is director of the Doctorate in Physical Therapy program and dean of the new School of Health Sciences.
Trine is currently accepting applications for the DPT program. Letters of acceptance are scheduled to be sent in spring 2014, with classes projected to begin in fall 2014.

Graduation from a physical therapist education program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE), 1111 North Fairfax Street, Alexandria, VA 22314; phone, 703-706-3245; accreditation@apta.org is necessary for eligibility to sit for the licensure examination, which is required in all states.
Trine University is seeking accreditation of a new physical therapist education program from CAPTE. The program will submit an Application for Candidacy, which is the formal application required in the pre-accreditation stage. Submission of this document does not assure that the program will be granted Candidate for Accreditation status. Achievement of Candidate for Accreditation status is required prior to implementation of the professional phase of the program; therefore, no students may be enrolled in professional courses until Candidate for Accreditation status has been achieved. Further, though achievement of Candidate for Accreditation status signifies satisfactory progress toward accreditation, it does not assure that the program will be granted accreditation.
