The position of Assistant Professor requires an individual who can provide excellence in teaching, interested in both their students and their subjects.  They must be committed to excellence in teaching. The Assistant Professor should have a broad understanding of appropriate academic programs and potential future directions; be flexible, visionary, creative and energetic; and want students to excel. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Essential duties and responsibilities include instructing mechanical engineering courses (e.g. Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Dynamics, System Dynamics and Controls, Mechanics of Machinery, Machine Component Design, Mechatronics, Mechanical Measurement), advising students regarding academic issues, serving the department, school, and university in the form of committee work and as needed, and engaging in ongoing professional development activities. Educational research (ASEE), applied research with undergraduate students or industry supported research in collaboration with Innovation 1, Trine University’s technological outreach center, is encouraged. Additional duties and responsibilities include to:

  • Teach the standard faculty load of twelve (12) semester hours per semester or twenty-four (24) semester hours per academic year.
  • Post and maintain a regular schedule of at least ten (10) office hours per week – one office hour shall be scheduled per week for each credit hour of instruction.
  • Provide instruction (teach class) for the length of time listed in the official schedule.
  • Prepare and grade a midterm and a final exam or project for each course.
  • Provide each student with a course syllabus.
  • Submit absentee and academic deficiency information to Academic Support Services via the Trine’s We Care early alert system.
  • Assist students experiencing academic difficulties, or with academic deficiencies.
  • Advise prospective and current students regarding course scheduling and curriculum requirements.
  • Providing mentoring and career guidance to students.
  • Participate in developing or implementing the department strategic plan, as requested by the department chair.
  • An Assistant Professor will also be responsible and accountable for additional duties and assignments as prescribed by the respective department chair, school dean, and vice president for academic affairs.


The successful candidate will have an earned doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field by the contract start date.  

The successful candidate will possess the ability to:

  • read, analyze, and interpret periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations
  • write reports, correspondence, and procedures
  • effectively present information and respond to questions from a variety of audiences
  • comprehend and apply principles of multivariate calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, and statistics
  • apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems
  • deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.) in its most difficult phases

Experience with and commitment to one or more of the following is preferable for candidates at the rank of Assistant Professor:

  • Promotion of academic program(s)
  • Assessing student competence and performance
  • Service to the University
  • Attending faculty meetings and participating in faculty committees
  • Student recruiting and retention (in conjunction with Admissions)
  • Service to the community
  • Activities leading to professional development and growth
  • Scholarship, which could include current and relevant publications, and attending and participating in conferences and seminars.
  • Exemplary personal conduct – students and colleagues recognize the faculty member as a true professional

Appointments at the rank of Associate Professor may be considered depending on the candidate’s qualifications.
