Ever since I visited downtown Chicago as a child and saw the enormity of the skyscrapers, I knew I wanted to be a civil engineer. Before coming to Trine to teach in the area of structural engineering, I spent five years as a design engineer in St. Louis, Mo., and six years as a bridge researcher in McLean, Va. "Bridge researcher" is a sophisticated way of saying that I was paid to put bridges into a big machine and break them. I have lots of videos of exploding concrete from the tests, and I am happy to show them.

At Trine, I enjoy working with students to make a canoe of floating concrete for the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) student competition. I also teach the civil engineering materials class and several structural design classes.

When not on campus, I spend quality time with my wife, Kimberley, and our three children. I enjoy woodworking, gardening, running and swimming.
